Artist Statement
Making the "creative process" my lifestyle is not a "sacrifice." On the contrary, it allows for expression on multiple levels. It's never stifling. It challenges me. Every time I step in front of that canvas, I wonder how today's "conversation" between me and the canvas will go. It is an intimate dialog of color and line, and every mark has a consequence. It feels good, and it adds purpose to my life. I take endless walks through nature, which is good for my soul and inspires me.
What: I paint on paper and canvas. I use mostly acrylics, charcoal, and oil pastels. I am most at home expressing my thoughts and feelings abstractly.
Why: I love to paint. Painting gives me tremendous joy. In addition, the creative process challenges me. How: Every time I step in front of that canvas, I wonder how today's conversation between me and the canvas will go. It is an intimate dialogue of color and line, and every mark has a consequence—an exchange of thoughts and feelings between me and the canvas that somehow leads to a painting. It's like storytelling; in the beginning, we have no idea how it will end. So, I like to be bold in my color choices initially. I then try to dial down the temperature by introducing more natural tones while leaving bits and pieces of the bright colors visible.
Finally, I feel that when a painting is finished, complete—when it works. What inspires me? I take endless walks in nature. I SEE colors, forms, and shapes. I FEEL light, smells, and moods. What I experience in nature daily, I take with me into my studio and ultimately pour into the painting. Conceptualizing my thoughts and feelings through creative painting is incredibly fulfilling and adds a profound purpose to my life.
